(1899-1989)
   dramatist
   Born in Rouen, Armand Salacrou, despite praise for his early works (Tour à terre, 1925; Patchouli, 1930), had difficulty becoming known and had his first success only with Une femme libre (1934). With L'Inconnued'Arras (1934), he emerged as one of the creators of the most original form of avant-garde theater. From surrealism to bourgeois comedy and from Pirandellisms to other involved works, his theater covers all genres. Considering dramatic work as a meditation on the human condition, Salacrou expressed the suffering and anguish of life as an adventure whose meaning escaped him. He published his memoirs under the title Dans la Salle des pas perdus (1974-76). Salacrou was named to the Académie Goncourt in 1949.
